The Data Analyst studies large databases in order to extract information to help in decision-making.
In the video game industry, a “Game Data Analyst” analyzes player behavior data to improve the user experience and profitability of the game.
Extracting information from large databases requires statistical analysis of the available data.
A correct interpretation requires good knowledge of statistics, and the ability to identify interpretation biases (selection bias, missing variable bias, distinction between correlation and causation, etc.).
Querying a database usually involves writing queries in SQL.
A good understanding of this language is required to accurately extract the necessary data.
Subsequently, the manipulation of the extracted data is done through dedicated software such as R, Python, Excel, SAS, etc.
The Data Analyst is able to create graphs, tables, and data visualizations that communicate complex information clearly and efficiently.
In addition, it is important to master software dedicated to data visualization, such as Tableau Software.
Knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning is a plus, allowing the Data Analyst to conduct more advanced analyses: user base segmentation, trend prediction, multifactorial analysis, etc.
Here are some of the required qualities for a Data Analyst:
The role of a Data Analyst requires, on the one hand, a good understanding of internal client needs.
On the other hand, they must be able to simplify complex information, often including mathematical concepts. Therefore, communication is a key skill for a data analyst.
A Data Analyst must be able to work with vast, varied, and complex data sets, and extract meaningful insights.
A methodical and organized mind is an asset for this role.
ISART offers a program that lead to a career in Data Analysis, in Montreal (Canada).
The Game Data Analyst program at ISART Montreal is open to candidates with experience or training in video games, economics, marketing, and related fields.

The video game industry in France has grown from 3,000 employees in 2010 to 20,000 in 2022 (source: National Union of Video Games (SNJV)). However, the industry faces a shortage of professionals trained in data analysis (as well as in monetization techniques and innovative digital marketing strategies).
One indicator of the industry’s strong growth is the number of job openings that have been constantly increasing in data management positions (+100%) between 2018 and 2021, thus providing employment opportunities for Game Data Analysts.
A Game Data Analyst can work in a video game development studio or with a publisher. They work collaboratively with the development team to improve the user experience and game performance.
They can also work with the marketing team to understand market trends and help develop effective marketing strategies.
The profession of Data Analyst is also hiring in other industries such as finance, insurance, e-commerce, energy, etc.
The Marketing Director develops the marketing strategy to increase brand awareness and improve the promotion of the company’s products/services.
They plan, implement, and oversee all marketing actions of the company.
In the gaming industry, the Publishing Manager coordinates the strategy for the publication and distribution of a video game to consumers.
